Carbon neutrality – Our goal to achieve carbon neutrality

The climate crisis is the defining challenge of our time, with rising sea levels and ocean temperatures serving as critical indicators of our planets health. As the science around global warming becomes indisputably clear, the urgency for action by governments, businesses and individuals has never been greater.

Our vision is centred on being a sustainable and ethical business, one that benefits the communities we operate in, fosters economic enterprise and preserves the natural environment. We measure, monitor and manage our carbon footprint, and are guided by the requirements of ISO 14064, ISO 14068 and the GHG Protocol, the internationally accepted standard for carbon accounting.

In June 2021, Sonardyne set a strategic and ambitious goal to become carbon neutral across all Scope 1, 2 and measurable Scope 3 emissions at its UK facilities by December 2025. No easy task especially when many peers were setting targets for 2040 and beyond. But at Sonardyne, bold action and rapid progress are part of our DNA. Whether its innovating safer and more efficient ways to explore our planet or aligning our operations with recognised sustainability standards, we are committed to making a positive impact.

With such commitment and ambition, it will come as no surprise that Sonardyne achieved carbon neutrality for the financial year 2023, 2 years ahead of our target. Reaching this milestone is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our entire team who helped meet this incredibly challenging goal.

This mission statement sets the strategic direction for Sonardyne to achieve carbon neutrality by the end of 2025 and outlines existing and planned initiatives to fulfil this ambition.

Sonardyne recognises the need for sustainable use of energy to mitigate climate impact and degradation of the environment for the preservation of future generations. As part of our five-year strategic plan, Sonardyne is aiming to become carbon neutral by the end of 2025 in accordance with PAS 2060.

Initiatives already in place to integrate effective energy management within the existing business include:

• Installation of three photovoltaic arrays in March 2020 – 1,300 panels producing 533 kW of power
• Implementation of ISO 50001 certified Energy Management System
• Upgrades to electrical infrastructure and building fabric since 2018
• Installation of Building Management Systems
• Procurement of Certified Renewable Energy for the period October 2019 – September 2023

Our success in reaching carbon neutrality earlier than anticipated is a clear indication that by acting now, at a local level, yields significant results. It underscores the importance of setting bold targets and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility throughout our organisation.

On this page you can download our first ever Carbon Neutrality Report which details how we calculated our carbon, our methodology towards offsetting and you can view our carbon neutral pathway to residual carbon only status, which outlines some of the actions we’ve already taken to reduce our footprint and also the plans we have going forward to 2040.

Next steps

2025 will see Sonardyne include carbon emissions from our international facilities in Brazil, USA and Singapore. In addition, we will seek to achieve formal certification to ISO 14068 through our chosen certification partner, LRQA.

Our managing director says

“Doing the right thing and committing to it properly has also had real business benefits, beyond saving 120 tonnes of carbon a year, we have also saved in the order of 30% on our energy costs.”

Graham Brown Managing director (Since 2016)

Taken from the Carbon Neutrality verification and validation report…

“Sonardyne has achieved carbon neutrality for the financial year 2023, via a limited assurance verification of its Greenhouse Gas Footprint, Carbon Neutrality Report 2024, Carbon Neutrality Management Plan and supporting evidence. This is on the basis that the total amount of carbon emitted for 2023 (based upon a market calculation) has been wholly offset by carbon credits of legitimate provenance.”
